NEW YORK -- Derrick Rose is the first player selected in tonight's NBA draft. The Chicago Bulls have taken the Memphis guard, who came close to leading the Tigers to the National Championship last season. He contributed 18 points, six rebounds and eight assists in the title-game loss against Kansas. He was named to the NCAA Tournament Final Four team after taking MVP honors in the South Regional.
Rose averaged 14.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists in his
lone season with the Tigers, finishing second on the team in
scoring and first in assists. He came within one assist of a
triple-double against Gonzaga, ending up with 19 points and eight
rebounds. Rose scored at least 20 points nine times, with several
of those games coming in the NCAA tournament.
Rose was named to the AP All-America Third Team and earned First
Team honors in Conference USA. He also was the conference Freshman
of the Year and a Wooden Award finalist.
