NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks have gone international with
the sixth pick in the NBA draft, taking Danillo Gallinari of Italy.
Gallinari is arguably the most polished offensive player among
the Europeans in this draft. He led Armani Jeans Milano in scoring
and was second in rebounds last year, averaging 17.5 points and 5.3
boards in the Italian A-1 league. He also excelled in Euroleague
competition last season, delivering 14.9 points and four rebounds a
Gallinari had two double-doubles and had 11 games of at least 20
points last season. He made his pro debut in the Italian B-1 league
as a 16-year-old in 2004, three years before he was selected to the
Italian All-Star game.
The 6-foot-8 Gallinari has a strong mid-range jumper and owns
the skills to go to the basket. He climbed the ladder in Italy
rather quickly, relying on his basketball knowledge to move
comfortably to the next level.
