WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Roger Federer stretched his winning
streak on grass to 64 matches and reached the Wimbledon semifinals
Wednesday by beating Mario Ancic 6-1, 7-5, 6-4.
Federer, the only man at this year's tournament to win every
set, is trying to win his sixth straight title at the All England Club.
Marat Safin advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals Wednesday by beating Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), 6-2 to set up a match against five-time champion Roger Federer.
Safin, the first Russian man to reach the Wimbledon semifinals
in the Open era, was trailing 5-2 in the first set when play was
suspended by rain.
The former top-ranked player has won two Grand Slam titles, the
last coming at the 2005 Australian Open.
Rafael Nadal is moving closer to his third straight Wimbledon final, beating Andy Murray 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
Nadal, who lost to five-time defending champion Roger Federer in
the final the last two years but has won four straight French Open
titles, will face Rainer Schuettler or Arnaud Clement in the
The 12th-seeded Murray, who was playing in his first Grand Slam
quarterfinal match, had been trying to become the first British man
to win the Wimbledon title in 72 years.
