PINEVILLE, LA.—Jeramey Johnson and Payton Burson combined on a four-hit shutout as the College Station Twelve 11U AAA team moved to 5-0 in the USSSA World Series with a 7-0 victory over the Jackson Diamond Dogs on Thursday afternoon at the Ward 9 Pineville Sportsplex.
The Twelve will play next on Friday at 9 a.m. College Station needs one more victory to reach the championship game in the double-elimination tournament. If College Station wins at 9 a.m. on Friday, it would play in the championship game at 1. A loss at 9 would force the Twelve to play another game at 11.
On Thursday, Johnson pitched the first four innings against the Tennessee state champions while Burson came in to finish the final two. Both College Station pitchers benefitted from some tremendous defensive plays, including a sliding catch by right fielder Cameron Carver to end the game.
Shortstop Walker Davis, left fielder Zach Oden, centerfielder Kyle Barfield, second baseman Jake Georgiades also turned in some stellar defensive plays.
College Station jumped to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Johnson and Oden had the big hits in the five-run first. Oden and Johnson both had two hits, while catcher Ryan Johnson had yet another extra-base hit later in the game. Ryan Johnson, who hit four homers in the first three days of the tournament, had a triple on Thursday.
