SAINT-AMAND-MONTROND, France (AP) - Carlos Sastre has closed in on a victory in the Tour de France by retaining the overall lead
after a time trial in the next-to-last stage of the three-week
The 33-year-old Spaniard held off his top rivals in Saturday's
20th stage from Cerilly to Saint-Amand-Montrond won by Stefan
Schumacher of Germany.
The scene is set for one of the closest Tours when the race ends
Sunday on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.
But the result is likely to disappoint Cadel Evans, the prerace
favorite who was unable to overcome his deficit of 1 minute, 34
seconds to Sastre entering the stage.
