COLLEGE STATION, Texas – USTA Summer Circuit play continues throughout the Midwest for members of the Texas A&M men’s tennis team over the weekend.
Sophomores Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.), Wil Spencer (Ponce de Leon, Fla.) and Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas) prepare for the singles main draw of the prestigious USTA Boys 18’s National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. Competition begins Friday at Kalamazoo College. Krajicek is seeded fifth, Spencer in the top 16 and Karimi a wild-card entry. The trio’s presence in Kalamazoo marks the most Aggies ever to compete in the draw in the history of the tournament. The winner of the singles draw will earn a wild card into the men’s U.S. Open main draw in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., in late August.
Senior All-American Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) reached the quarterfinals of the singles main draw at the USTA/Ursula Beck Pro Tennis Classic held in Decatur, Ill. He handily defeated American Tyler Hochwalt, 6-3, 6-2, in first-round action and will face second-seeded and No. 517-ranked Ravel Klaasen of South Africa in the quarters. Pollock, ranked No. 1310 in the world and competing as an amateur, defeated American Eric Spector, 6-2, 6-0, Canadian Attila Nagy, 6-2, 6-0, and American Charles Weber, 6-2, 6-7 (9), 6-3, in the qualifying rounds.
Pollock and incoming freshman Austin Klores (Franklin, Texas) received a wild card into the doubles main draw at the Beck Pro Tennis Classic, but fell to Americans Jeff Dadamo and Tyler Hochwalt, 7-5, 6-1, in the opening round. Klores also competed in qualifying singles and upended fourth-seeded and No. 1049-ranked Dane Fernandez in three sets, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3, in the finals.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton led the Texas Junior Davis Cup Team to a 4-3 upset of the second-seeded Southern Section Team in Urbana-Champaign, Ill. Texas eventually lost to the Florida Junior Davis Cup Team, 5-2, in the semifinals. Floridian Aggie Wil Spencer went undefeated in Junior Davis Cup play with four singles match victories, despite his team’s loss to the Southern California Junior Davis Cup Team in the finals, 4-3.
