PINEHURST, N.C. – North Carolina State’s Brandon Detweiler defeated Texas A&M sophomore Conrad Shindler 1 up on Wednesday in the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2.
Detweiler birdied the par-4 18th hole to square the match and force an extra hole. Shindler never trailed in the hard-fought match until Detweiler closed him out with a par on the first extra hole.
Shindler tied for 33rd in stroke play on and Tuesday with rounds of 73-70=143. A&M senior Bronson Burgoon shot 74-78=152 and was not among the 64 players who advanced to the match play bracket.
