CALDWELL -- The Caldwell Hornet football team returned to the playoffs last season thanks to a 8-1 regular season slate. Its only blemish was a 21-7 loss to eventual district champion Giddings on the road October 26.
Hornets Head Coach Dale Williams lost 25 seniors off that squad, and while he doesn't like the phrase "rebuilding", he does acknowledge it's going to take some reloading for the Hornets to return to the playoffs in 2008.
The problem is not only replacing 25 seniors, but competing in one of the toughest 3A district in the state.
District 24-3A is headlined by Navasota, picked by some to challenge for the 3A Division 1 state championship this year. Rockdale has also been tabbed as a playoff possibility along with Madisonville. Caldwell has been picked to finish 5th according to Dave Campbell's Texas Football, right behind Cameron and ahead of Taylor and Rudder.
Williams has just 2 starters back on defense and has been working on filling those holes since two-a-days began earlier this month.
The news is a little better on the offensive side of the football with 4 starters back.
Now because Caldwell went two rounds deep in the playoffs last season, there were plenty of players who gained some valuable experience as back-ups. One of those was Trenton Sims who's expected to be the Hornets starting quarterback in the season opener Friday night in Bellville.
Kick-off from the Pasture Of Pain will be 7:30.
