Madisonville -- The Madisonville Mustangs beat Groesbeck 28 - 13 in the season opener for both teams.
The Goats got the scoring started with a Brieson Tatum touchdown run giving Groesbeck a 7 - 0 lead. Madisonville got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a Brock Taylor 62 yard touchdown run. The Mustangs missed the extra point and trailed 7 - 6 at the half.
Chris Whaley gave Madisonville a 12 - 7 lead in the third quarter with a 6 yard touchdown run. Groesbeck jumped back in front 13 - 12 with a Caleb Holbrook 25 yard touchdown pass to Darren Ingram. Whaley closed out the scoring in the third quarter with a 23 yard touchdown run giving a Madisonville an 18 - 13 lead. Josh Cobbs recovered a Groesbeck fumble to set up a Taylor touchdown run to close out the scoring.
The Mustangs will be back on their home field September 5th to take on Coldspring. Groesbeck will play Teague the same night at home.
