Southern Cal Climbs To The Top

By  |

NEW YORK (AP) - Southern California is Number 1 in The
Associated Press Top 25 college football poll. The Trojans jumped
two spots from their preaseason ranking on the strength of a
dominant performance on the road against a BCS conference opponent.
USC opened with a 52-7 victory at Virginia.
Georgia and Ohio State each dropped a spot to second and third,
respectively, following easy wins at home over lesser programs.
Oklahoma and Florida also got first-place votes and continue to
round out the first five.
Missouri and LSU also picked up a first-place mention and remain
sixth and seventh, while West Virginia still checks in at Number 8.
Clemson is the casualty of the week, dropping out of the poll
from Number 9 after a loss to Alabama. The Crimson Tide vault from
24th to 13th on the strength of that victory.

Here are the Top 25 teams in The Associated Press
college football poll, with first-place votes in parentheses,
records through September 1st, total points based on 25 points for
a first-place vote through one point for a 25th-place vote, and
