Huntsville -- With Hurricane Ike headed towards the Texas coast, the Sam Houston State vs. Prairie Panthers football game scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday night at Bowers Stadium is still on.
"Although it is still very early to make definitive decisions concerning the operations and events at SHSU with hurricane Ike looming, it is our present intention to remain open and to hold the Parent's Weekend and the Saturday football game as planned," University President Dr. Jim Gaertner said. "We will monitor the storm closely and stay in constant contact with local and state officials. If a decision is made to close the university or to cancel scheduled weekend activities we will notify fans as soon as that decision is made."
The football game matches two undefeated teams in an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision non-conference games. Sam Houston is 1-0 and the Panthers are 2-0.
"Obviously, the safety of our student-athletes, fans and staff is our primary concern, but we're going to play this game if at all possible," SHSU Director of Athletics Bobby Williams said. "We're keeping an eye on the situation, but if the Hurricane continues on its predicted track to South Texas, we anticipate playing the game. Please continue to check our web site at www.gobearkats.com for any updates."
