COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman has yet to publicly name his starting quarterback for Saturday's game against Miami.
Senior Stephen McGee, who's started A&M's last 29 games,
sprained his throwing shoulder in the first quarter against New
Mexico on September 6th.
Sophomore Jerrod Johnson came in and threw three touchdown
passes to lead the Aggies to a 28-22 victory.
McGee and Johnson have been splitting practice snaps at
quarterback this week.
Johnson also continues to see time at receiver, where he's been
working since Sherman named McGee the starting quarterback midway
through training camp.
An MRI revealed no structural damage to McGee's shoulder. McGee
felt no pain in a light workout on Sunday and Sherman said McGee
would be re-evaluated mid-week.
NEXT GENERATION: -- A&M defensive coordinator Joe Kines has been around so long, he's starting to face the next generation of
players he coached.
Miami quarterback Robert Marve is the son of former NFL
linebacker Eugene Marve, who played for Tampa Bay when Kines was
the Buccaneers' linebackers coach from 1987-90.
Kines was an assistant at Alabama from 2003-06 and said the
Crimson Tide recruited the younger Marve, who was voted the best
prep player in Florida in 2007.
PRE-MIAMI HURRICANE: -- More than half the players on Texas
A&M's roster came from areas that sustained damage from Hurricane
But Coach Mike Sherman said the storm won't interrupt his team's
preparation this week.
Sherman talked to his team about the storm and said "nobody
seems to have anything major in their lives that is affecting them
A&M had a scheduled open date Saturday, when Ike struck Texas.
Every other sporting event in the area slated for the weekend was
postponed, relocated or canceled altogether, while the Aggies
didn't have to alter their practice schedule at all.
ROLE OF HONOR: -- Former coach R.C. Slocum will head a class of
six who will be inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame
The other inductees include Ricky Barker (track and field),
Bobby Jack Gross (track and field), Daylan Holt (baseball), Jenna
Moscovic (volleyball) and Vernon Smith (men's basketball).
Slocum is the winningest coach in school history, compiling a
123-47-2 record from 1989-2002. Sherman worked as Slocum's
offensive line coach from 1989-93 and 1995-96.
BY THE NUMBERS: -- A&M has won nine straight games when it has fewer turnovers than its opponent. The Aggies have lost 14 of 19 in which they have given away the same number or more turnovers than their opponent. ... A&M has been outscored 30-7 in the second
halves of its first two games. The Aggies have not scored in the
third quarter this season. ... Senior punter Justin Brantly leads
the Big 12 and ranks eighth nationally with a 45.8-yard average.
A&M has played a total of 15 freshmen in the first two games.
QUOTABLE: "We've got two bricks and a little mortar. That's all
we've got. And everybody wants to know what color the roof is." -
