For only the second time in Sam Houston football history, a Bearkat quarterback threw five touchdown passes and rushed for another as SHSU defeated Gardner-Webb 49-33 in an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision non-conference game.
While three quarterbacks (Chris Chaloupka in 1999, Josh McCown in 2001 and Dustin Long in 2004) previous had thrown five touchdowns in one game (a total of eight times -- Long four times, Chaloupka three and McCown once), only Long had added a running TD to the performance.
Long threw for five touchdowns and ran for another against McNeese State in 2004.
Rhett Bomar equaled the feat against GWU, throwing scoing passes of 19, 10, 23, 40 and seven yards and running for a 14 yard TD.
Bomar completed 22 of 29 passes for 340 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions.
