HUNTSVILLE -- Two days after a record setting performance at Gardner-Webb, Sam Houston State quarterback Rhett Bomar has earned a couple of honors including a national recognition for his efforts against the Bulldogs.
On Monday, Bomar was named a College Sporting News National All-Star as well as Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
On Saturday in a road game at Gardner-Webb, Bomar became the fourth quarterback in school history to pass for five touchdowns in a game in a 49-33 win over the Bulldogs. To top it off, all five scores came in the first half where Bomar tallied 323 yards passing.
He played just one series of the second half, adding a 14-yard scoring
scamper to his stat line, joining Dustin Long as the only quarterbacks to
have a rushing touchdown as well as five passing scores in the same game.
"There is no doubt Rhett was dialed in for that game," said head coach Todd Whitten. "He just wasn't missing on very many throws and we were able to put some points one the board fast. I was really impressed with the way he played in that game."
Bomar finished the abbreviated night under center completing 22-of-29 passes for 340 yards and no interceptions. It is the second consecutive week he has topped the 300-yard mark, throwing for 340 last week against No. 19 Kansas. It is the third game of his Sam Houston State career to top 300 yards passing.
Bomar also becomes the first Sam Houston State player to earn a national player of the week honor since 2004 when Long was named Sports Network National Player of the Week.
