COLLEGE STATION -- The Texas A&M softball team opens its fall season on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Temple Junior College at the Aggie Softball Complex. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
Tuesday marks the first of an eight-game fall slate. A&M softball had two intrasquad scrimmages already and continues play this weekend in Spring Texas at the Spring Klein College Classic.
“Our players have worked really hard for the past month and it’s going to feel really good to get out there and play a game,” said head coach Jo Evans. “We’re a totally different team from last year and it will give us a chance to see our newcomers and how the team gels. These games are a good gauge to know what we need to work on to be ready for our spring season.”
The Aggies return 10 letterwinners from a national runner-up squad in 2008. The Aggies’ trip to the Women’s College World series was A&M’s second straight and seventh all-time. In addition, A&M earned its second Big 12 regular season title and first ever Big 12 Championship tournament title.
New faces on this year’s roster are freshmen Kelsea Orsak (Pearland, Texas), Eden Morris (Cohutta, Ga.), Taryn Broussard (Lake Jackson, Texas), Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) and senior transfer Savana Lloyd (Kirkland, Wash.).
Big 12 Coach of the Year, Jo Evans, and her staff, (Associate Head Coaches Joy Jackson and Mary Jo Firnbach) which was voted the 2008 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year, remain at the helm of one of the top programs in the nation.
A&M begins its regular season at home on Feb. 6 hosting the Aggie Classic.
