CINCINNATI (AP) - Embattled former University of Texas running
back Cedric Benson today signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, a franchise known for employing players with off-the-field issues. Two grand juries last week declined to indict the ex-Longhorn over two alcohol-related arrests this year in the Austin area.
Benson will take the spot of running back DeDe Dorsey, who was
placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury suffered during a
20-12 loss to Cleveland.
Chris Perry is Cincinnati's starter at running back.
The Bengals on Sunday will visit the Dallas Cowboys.
Benson started 12 games for the Chicago Bears from 2005-07,
running for 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns. He missed five games
with an ankle injury last season, but had a career-high 674 yards.
The Bears cut Benson after he was arrested in May on charges of
boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest, and again in June
on a drunken driving charge.
