TULSA, Okla. – Texas A&M sophomore All-American Austin Krajicek and sophomore Wil Spencer moved on to the second round of the qualifying singles draw at the D’Novo ITA All-American Championships held Monday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Day four of the 10-day tournament was delayed due to rain, but both Aggies were able to play their first-round matches outdoors as the inclement weather cleared by the late afternoon.
Krajicek, a native of Brandon, Fla., outlasted 23rd-seeded and No. 72-ranked Marek Michalicka of Wisconsin in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, to advance to tomorrow’s round of 64. Michalicka was named Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year last season as was Krajicek in the Big 12 Conference. Spencer, a native of Ponce de Leon, Fla., also held off a Big Ten opponent in No. 95-ranked Andrew Mazlin of Michigan, 6-3, 6-2. He has now won four of his last five matches of the fall season after going 3-1 at the Baylor Intercollegiate Invitational on Sept. 26-28.
Krajicek and Spencer are two of the Aggies top returning players and are currently No. 97 and No. 102 respectively in the preseason ITA singles rankings. Competition continues tomorrow on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
