Knoxville, Tenn. – Sophomore Sarah Zwartynski fired a one-under-par 71 on Friday to lead No. 19-ranked Texas A&M into a tie for eighth place after the opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Fox Den Country Club.
Zwartynski is tied for ninth in the individual standings, three shots out of the lead shared by North Carolina’s Sydney Crane, North Carolina State’s Lauren Doughtie and Central Florida’s Marika Lendl. Zwartynski started her round with 12 straight pars before posting birdies on the 13th and 15th holes. A bogey on the par-4 17th was the lone blemish on her scorecard.
Tournament host Tennessee leads the team standings by six strokes after opening with a 5-under 283. No. 10-ranked North Carolina is in second at 289, followed by North Carolina State (290), No. 18 LSU (291), Furman (294), Mississippi (295), No. 20 Louisville (295), A&M (296), Kentucky (296), Chattanooga (296), South Carolina (297), No. 21 Kent State (300), Central Florida (300), No. 24 Arkansas (303), Tulane (304), No. 12 Denver (305), SMU (306), and Indiana State (332).
A&M freshman Crystal Reeves (73) is tied for 23rd, junior Ashley Freeman (76) and senior Lauren Johnson (76) are tied for 49th, and sophomore Alexa Porter (80) is tied for 82nd).
