MIDLAND, Texas – Texas A&M women’s tennis player Elzé Potgieter won two singles matches today to advance to the semifinals of the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational. Potgieter, the tournament’s No. 1 seed in the singles bracket, began the day by defeating Kelsey Garland of Texas Tech, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 16. She then held off Nebraska’s Wiveca Swarting, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (7), in the quarterfinals to advance.
Potgieter will face Alex Liles of Pepperdine at 9 a.m. on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the championship match. Liles is the older sister of Aggie sophomore Christi Liles.
Christi Liles fell in her only singles match of the day as she was defeated by Irina Paraschin of North Texas, 7-5, 6-0.
In doubles action, the Aggie duo of Potgieter and Liles fell to Pichittra Thongdach (Boise State) and Paraschin, 8-5.
The tournament concludes on Sunday.
