FORT WORTH -- Three of Texas A&M’s women’s doubles teams won their second-round matches today to advance to the Round of 16 at the ITA Southwest Regional at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus in Fort Worth, Texas.
“We had some very good, hard fought matches today,” A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. “I feel like the players really stepped up. We had some tough draws, and I think they made the most of them. We didn’t come away with all the wins, but our young people really showed they are ready to play and are not afraid of anybody.”
The A&M tandem of Christina Amo (Fort Worth) and Ashley Turpin (New Braunfels, Texas) pulled off the biggest upset of the day, defeating Texas’ seventh-seeded Stephanie Davison and Caroline Larsson, 8-5. The Aggies will take on Roxana Enica and Alina Shazhko of Stephen F. Austin on Saturday in the Round of 16.
In other action, A&M’s Christi Liles (Largo, Fla.) and Elzé Potgieter (Bloemfontein, South Africa), seeded No. 6, held off Angela Dangond and Milou Israel of Louisiana-Lafayette, 9-7. A&M faces Kayla Duncan and Gaby Mastromarino of TCU tomorrow.
No. 8 seeded Stephanie Davidson (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas) and Morgan Frank (Oldsmar, Fla.) of A&M also advanced as they cruised past SMU’s Casey Kennedy and Kristen Reid, 8-3. The Aggies will meet Irina Paraschiv and Madura Ranganathan of North Texas in the Round of 16.
“I feel like we continue to have success in doubles this fall, and I think that is going to pay off in the spring,” Kleinecke said. “We are getting some great experienced, so I am very proud of them.”
The freshman duo of Sheri Olivier (Topeka, Kan.) and Lauren Santacroce (Spring, Texas), suffered A&M’s only doubles loss, falling to No. 5 seeded Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk of Baylor, 8-4.
In singles, A&M opened main draw competition winning four of seven matches. Seventh seeded Potgieter opened with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Kristen Reid of SMU. No. 11 seed Frank defeated Kayla Duncan of TCU, 6-2, 6-2, and No 16 seed Liles came back to defeat SFA’s Roxana Enica, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. Santacroce also advanced to the Round of 32 by defeating Simone Tempelton of Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-1.
All three of A&M‘s main draw losses were decided in three sets. Olivier came close to an upset, taking the first set against No. 4 seed Taylor Ormond of Baylor but falling in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
“Sheri just played a very, very strong match all the way through,” Kleinecke said. “That was a great battle, and I was very, very pleased with the progress she has shown so far.”
Davidson suffered the same fate, winning the first set, 6-2, against Madura Ranganathan of North Texas, but then dropping the next two, 7-5, 6-2. Ashley Turpin came up short, falling to Katariina Tuohimaa of TCU, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3).
“I feel like we were right there, and I think the young people learned that a couple points can determine the wins and losses of these matches,” Kleinecke said.
Amo completed her competition in the consolations of the qualifying draw, getting a default victory over Lena Satge of Louisiana Monroe before falling to Daniela Posada of Northwestern State 4-6; 6-4; 10-8.
The tournament runs through Monday with the singles finalists and the doubles champion earning an automatic berth into the ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 6-9 in Charlottesville, Va.
“I’m very pleased so far, and the thing is that now we have to keep going,” Kleinecke said. “We have to keep competing like we have been. Every match is a tough match, and we have to stay ready to play.”
