Aggie Men Advance At ITA

By  |

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men’s tennis team sent three players to the singles quarterfinals and one team to the doubles semifinals after the second day of competition at the 2008 Wilson/ITA South Central Region Championships held Sunday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

The top-seeded and fourth-ranked combination of senior All-American Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore All-American Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.) combined for undefeated 6-0 day with two wins a piece in singles action and two in doubles. Pollock and Krajicek defeated Attila Bucko and Jurica Grubisic of Baylor by an 8-3 count in the round of 16 and eliminated Jonah Kane-West and Olivier Sajous of Texas, 8-5, to earn a well-deserved spot in tomorrow’s semifinals. They will take on fourth-seeded Ed Corrie and Jon Wiegand of Texas at 3 p.m.

“It was a great overall performance by our players today,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “Conor, Austin and Wil are playing really great tennis right now. With us playing this tournament at home, I was hopeful that our players would have a good showing. They have really come through and played very well.”

The Big 12 Conference showed its dominance in the regional singles draw with 10 of the round of 16 participants hailing from the league. Pollock, the No. 3 seed, downed James Wilson of Texas Tech, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 32 and ninth-seeded Attila Bucko of Baylor, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 16 to move on to tomorrow’s quarterfinals. He will face seventh-seeded and No. 46-ranked Olivier of Texas at 9:30 a.m.

Ninth-seeded Krajicek and ninth-seeded sophomore Wil Spencer (Ponce de Leon, Fla.) had hard-fought three-setters with their respective opponents in the round of 16 for a spot in tomorrow’s singles quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m. Krajicek upended sixth-seeded and No. 44-ranked Dominik Mueller of Baylor, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4, while Spencer upset top-seeded and seventh-ranked Dimitar Kutrovsky of Texas, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

It marked Spencer’s highest career match victory as an Aggie. He has won six of his last seven-straight matches and has beaten five ranked opponents this fall including his previous career-best over No. 18-ranked Dominic Inglot of Virginia in the singles main draw at the D’Novo ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 9.

“Right now, we are showing that we have three of the best guys in the Big 12,” said Denton on the regional competition. “Austin and Wil are two of the most improved players in the country. I feel good about their chances against any player. They are working hard and gaining a lot of confidence and momentum. This tournament shows just how tough our conference and region are. Our guys will have to be ready to step up when we play those big matches in the spring.”

Junior Marcus Lunt (San Antonio, Texas) also remains in the regional hunt as he advanced in singles consolation play. Lunt defeated Gonzalo Bienzobas of UT Arlington, 7-5, 6-2, in the round of 32, and later claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Piotr Olechowski of Louisiana-Lafayette in the round of 16. He will take on Joe Hattrup of Texas Tech in a consolation quarterfinal match slated for 8 a.m.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” Denton said. “Tomorrow is going to be a really hard day. This is a tough tournament with a lot of good players. I was really happy with everyone’s performance today which shows their maturity. Our guys are starting to believe in themselves.”

Admission is free and open to the public. The top two finalists in singles and the winner of doubles will move on to the prestigious ITA National Indoors on Nov. 6-9 on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
