COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M freshman Beth West was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week and freshman Bri Young was selected to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday.
A native of Centennial, Colo., West received the award for the first time after heading in the first game-winning goal of her career in overtime to lead A&M soccer over No. 12 Colorado last Sunday. The midfielder also started and led the Aggies with four shots in a 1-0 shutout at Texas Tech.
Young was honored by Soccer Buzz for the second time in her freshman campaign. The center back from Castle Pines North, Colo., netted two goals on the road last weekend – a game-winning header at Texas Tech and the equalizer in the 86th minute to send the match into overtime at Colorado. She leads the team with six goals and also had a team-high four shots against CU.
West and Young helped the Aggies to their league-leading sixth shutout in the Big 12 last Friday and moved the Aggies back into first place in the conference standings.
West is A&M’s ninth Big 12 Player of the Week this season. This team effort breaks the Aggies’ previous record of six such honors in one season. The last player to receive a weekly award was sophomore Kelly Dyer on Oct. 14.
Young is the fifth Aggie to be chosen to the Elite Team, with the last player being senior Laura Grace Robinson on Oct. 8.
The A&M soccer team moved up in the polls to No. 9 and closes out the regular season against Houston Baptist on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Aggies Soccer Stadium.
