HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State women’s basketball team which won only one of its 29 games last year starting the 2008-09 season with a victory, defeating the Houston Jaguars 82-81 in a thriller that went down to the last second.
The Jaguars play Texas A&M Friday night at Reed Arena.
Freshman Mary Beth Renz was fouled making a desperation three-pointer with one tick left on the clock. After a time out, she sank her second and third attempts for the game winner.
The Bearkats have never before defeated the AAU Jaguar team of former college players in a preseason exhibition game.
Transfer Therese Hager and returning sophomore Brittany Brooks led Sam Houston with 13 points.
“Things are really coming together for this young team,” SHSU head coach Brenda Nichols said. “This win is going to be a big boost for our confidence. We’re so excited for the kids to have their hard work pay off early.”
Sam Houston State earned the victory with quality shooting, hitting 27 of 50 field goal attempts for 54.0 percent from the floor. The Bearkats led 46-41 at halftime.
Sam Houston State will host a second preseason exhibition game Sunday, Nov. 9, against Texas College at 3 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
