DALLAS -- Lydia Gonzales scored 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Sam Houston State as the Bearkats lost to Fresno State 76-63 in the third place game at the SMU Women's Basketball Classic at Moody Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
Sam Houston (1-4) led 34-30 at halftime and were up seven points, 43-36 on a basket by Gonzales with 16:27 to play. Fresno State (3-1) then went on a 22-2 run to go up 58-45 five minutes later.
The Bulldogs ended up outscoring the Bearkats 46-29 in the second period. Fresno State was led by Marnique Arnold with 17 points.
Brittany Brooks added 11 points for Sam Houston. The Bearkats hit .446 from the field, hitting 29-of-65 including 3-of-13 three point attempts. Fresno State bounced back from .357 percent shooting in the first half to hit .419 for the game 26-of-62.
Fresno State out-rebounded the Bearkats 50 to 29. Arnold pulled down 11 for the Bulldogs.
Other scoring for Sam Houston included Therese Hager and Khamra Echols each with six points and Leasa Ailshie and Britni Martin with five apiece. Hager led the Bearkats with eight rebounds.
Sam Houston State continues its month-long road trip, heading to Auburn and Alabama next weekend.
