BRYAN- Blinn College setter Kayla Schmidt and outside hitter Cinthya Roberto garnered two more awards after leading the Lady Bucs to their first national championship. The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) named Schmidt and Roberto to its Two-Year Colleges Women’s Volleyball All-America First Team.
Earlier in the week the two players were named NJCAA Division I First Team All Americans. The AVCA represents all divisions of the NJCAA as well as California and Pacific Northwest colleges. The Blinn volleyball program has placed a total of seven All-Americans on the AVCA list.
Schmidt, a 5’10” sophomore from Bellville, was third in the nationally in assists per game, averaging 11.696. Along a .375 hitting percentage, she averaged 1.519 digs per game.
Freshman Cinthya Roberto of Brasilia, Brazil, was eighth nationally in kills, averaging
4.241 per game. The six-footer ranked in the top five in aces, averaging 0.722 per game. Roberto held a .3684 hitting percentage with an average of 2.215 digs per game.
The Lady Bucs finished the 2008 season 33-2 with a victory over the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith to earn the national title. It was Blinn’s sixth consecutive trip to the national tournament.
