HUNTSVILLE- The Sam Houston State men's basketball team will try to protect the home court tonight when it hosts Jarvis Christian at 7pm.
Sam Houston is 54-10 at home in Johnson Coliseum in its last five seasons and have won 47 of their last 49 non-conference home contests.
Junior guard Corey Allmond leads Sam Houston with 15.6 points per game. The transfer from Howard College is one of the top three point shooters in the country, hitting .549 from behind the arc (28-of-51). Allmond has scored 20 or more points in three games this year.
Also in double figures this season are junior point guard Ashton Mitchell (12.4), senior forward DeLuis Ramirez (11.3) and sophomore guard Lance Pevehouse (10.3).
Mitchell ranks among the nation's leaders in NCAA Division I men's basketball in assists with 7.9 per contest.e
Pevehouse scored 23 points in Sam Houston's loss at UTEP last week. That included an 80-foot trey point shot just before the halftime buzzer.
Senior Barkley Falkner and junior Preston Brown round out the Bearkats' starting lineup. Falkner is averaging 5.6 rebounds per game. Brown is scoring 8.3 points per contest including a 21 point output in Tuesday's Texas College victory.
Jarvis Christian brings a 5-2 record into the contest. The Bulldogs are led by guard Mitchell Johnson who scored 22 points in their 86-85 victory over LSU-Shreveport.
Sam Houston has five non-conference games remaining before starting 2009 Southland Conference action with a road TV game at Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, January 10.
