UT San Antonio Gets Approval For Football Team

AUSTIN -- The University of Texas at San Antonio got approval to create a new football program, and officials say the Roadrunners could stage their first game as early as 2011.

The UT board of regents approved the school's athletics
expansion Thursday.

Money from student fees, existing athletics funding and private
sources will be used to pay for the program, officials said. UTSA
officials say they plan to embark on a $100 million fundraising
campaign, $15 million of which will be slated for creation of the
football team.

Lynn Hickey, director of athletics at UTSA, said the school
would be looking to hire a coach "as quickly as we can." The
Roadrunners football team will be part of the Football Championship
Subdivision, or FCS.
