HUNTSVILLE -- The Sam Houston State men's basketball team faces its biggest challenge of the young 2008-09 season Sunday night at 7 p.m. when the Bearkats take on Texas A&M at Reed Arena in College Station.
The Aggies of the Big 12 Conference stand 10-1 and own a six-game winning streak. Texas A&M handed LSU its first loss of the year in the Aggies' last outing.
Sam Houston is 5-5 coming into the contest. The Bearkats own a three-game victory streak, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette 56-54 in Lafayette in their final contest before the Christmas break.
Three-point wiz Corey Allmond leads Sam Houston with 14.5 points per game. Point guard Ashton Mitchell and forward DeLuis Ramirez add 12.6 and 11.0 points per contest, respectively. Mitchell hit the game-winning basket for Sam Houston with two seconds remaining at Louisiana-Lafayette. The point guard also ranks among the top five in NCAA Division I men's basketball in assists.
Texas A&M will have a definite height advantage, starting 6-10 Chinemelu Elonu, 6-9 Bryan Davis and 6-7 Josh Carter up front. Carter averages 14.5 points and 4.2 rebounds, Davis 10.7 points and 6.8 boards and Elonu 8.1 points and 6.3 rebounds.
Another scoring threat for the Aggies is 6-3 guard Donald Sloan who is producing 12.5 points per contest.
