HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros have signed outfielder Brian
Bogusevic and pitcher Gilbert De La Vara to one-year deals worth
Bogusevic, 24, hit .371 with three home runs and 20 RBIs in 42
games for Double-A Corpus Christi last season. Bogusevic began the
2008 season as a starting pitcher before moving to the outfield in
July. Houston's first-round pick in 2005, Bogusevic played for the
Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League this winter and hit
.338 with 14 RBIs in 22 games.
De La Vara, 24, went 6-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 45 games for Class-A
Wilmington and Double-A Northwest Arkansas of the Royals
organization. De La Vara was drafted by Kansas City in June 2004
and was acquired by Houston in December in the Rule 5 Draft.
The Astros announced the signings Friday.
