Kats Top Creighton In Baseball Opener

HUNTSVILLE – Shortstop Jon Reed went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and Dallas Gallant pitched five innings for the victory as Sam Houston State defeated Creighton 8-6 in the season opener for both baseball teams at Don Sanders Stadium Friday night.

With two out in the top of the second inning, right fielder T. J. Roemmich singled and third baseman Jimmy Swift slapped a home run to left field to put Creighton up 2-0.

Heath Pugh doubled down the left field line to score Sam Houston’s first run. Ryan Mooney’s sacrifice fly to right scored Tyler Knight who had walked and reached third on Pugh’s double as the Bearkats knotted the contest 2-2 in the bottom of the second.

Second baseman Braeden Riley hit a solo home run to left field to give Sam Houston a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

The Bluejays loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth with a single and two walks. Second baseman Vicente Cafaro was hit by a pitch to tie the game and shortstop Elliot Soto scored on a grounder to second base to give Creighton up 4-3.

Riley, Seth Hammock and Reed each singled to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Riley scored on a wild pitch. Hammock tallied on a ground out by Nick Zaleski as the lead changed hands again with SHSU ahead 5-4.

The Bearkats added three more runs to go up 8-4 in the sixth inning. Reed hit a two-run single and Zaleski a one-run single.

The Bluejays picked up two runs in the top of the eighth inning on a double by Nick Becker and a single by T J. Roemmich.
