IRVING -- Sophomore Caleb Shofner was rewarded for his red-hot start to the season on Monday as he was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week, the league office announced.
Shofner (Hewitt, Texas/Midway HS) started all four games at third base for the top-ranked Aggies this weekend, marking the first starts of his career. He hit .900 (9-for-10) with a triple, home run and five RBIs while scoring 11 of A&M's 42 runs in a four-game sweep of Wright State.
Shofner, who was flawless in the field defensively as well, reached base safely in 15 of his 16 plate appearances on the weekend. He finished with hits in his last five at bats, scoring four of those five times. Shofner became the 15th Aggie player to earn the award.
In addition, junior Alex Wilson was named to the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week list by Collegiate Baseball newspaper after his effort on the mound Saturday.
Wilson (Hurricane, W.Va./Hurricane HS) made his first collegiate start in nearly two years on Saturday afternoon, and was dominant in a 9-0 win over the Raiders. Wilson, who transferred from Winthrop University prior to the `08 season and sat out last year after surgery, struck out 14 and walked only one in 6 2/3 shutout innings of work. He allowed just three hits on the afternoon, retired the first 13 batters of the game and allowed only one baserunner through the first six innings.
Texas A&M (4-0) closes out a six-game homestand this week when the Aggies host Centenary (0-0) on Tuesday (6:35 p.m.) and Wednesday (3:05 p.m.) at Olsen Field.
