Bearkats Gear Up For Hillcrest Ford / Sam Houston Baseball Classic

By  |

HUNTSVILLE -- Sam Houston State will host Nebraska, Saint Mary's and Missouri State in the Hillcrest Ford / Sam Houston Baseball Classic Friday through Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.

Missouri State is the preseason favorite in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bears rolled up a 40-17 record in 2008. Nebraska was a No. 1 regional seed in last year's NCAA tournament, compiling a 41-16-1 record. Saint Mary's went 26-26 last season to place sixth in the West Coast Conference.

For only the third time in school history, Sam Houston State baseball is off to a 5-0 season start. The Bearkats started the 1977 season 6-0 and with 5-0 in 1987 before falling to McNeese.

Sam Houston State has earned back-to-back berths in the NCAA Regional after consecutive Southland Conference post-season tournament championships.

Sam Houston State opened the 2009 season last weekend with a four-game sweep of 2007 NCAA Tournament participant Creighton. Tuesday the Kats added a 12-1 victory over Prairie View A&M.

Saint Mary's enters the tournament 3-1. Missouri State is 0-3. Nebraska stands 3-1-1.

Tickets to the tournament are $8 for reserved seats and $6 for general admission.
