No. 21 Aggies Soar to 12-1 Victory Over Hawks

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 21 Texas A&M softball team scored every inning in a 12-1 run rule of Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at the Texas A&M Invitational presented by the District on Luther.

Sophomore Rhiannon Kliesing threw a two-hitter and struck out two in five innings as the Aggies improved to 12-7. Monmouth fell to 2-2 after defeating Texas Southern, 9-0, in the first game of the invitational.

A&M jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first after rattling off five hits. Three consecutive singles by sophomore Natalie Villarreal, junior Macie Morrow and senior Holly Ridley started the inning and the scoring was highlighted by junior Alex Reynold’s two-run double to deep right field and Villarreal’s line-drive, RBI single off the glove of the Monmouth second baseman.

The Hawks took back one run in the bottom of the inning as Emily deLong hit a triple to center field to plate Nichole Alvarez.

Ridley led off the second frame with a line-drive single to left and scored from third on a sacrifice fly from Kliesing to put A&M back up by six runs.

The Aggie bats remained hot as freshman Kelsea Orsak started the inning with a bunt single. The Pearland, Texas, native stole second and crossed the plate on a double steal after Morrow reached on a walk. Morrow then scored from third on a sacrifice fly to center by Ridley.

In the fourth, a triple to right center by Reynolds plated junior Bailey Schroeder who led off with a single through the left side. Freshman Taryn Broussard hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Reynolds and gave A&M an 11-1 lead.

The Aggies tacked on their final run in the fifth with their fourth sacrifice fly of the game. Schroeder flew out to left and collected an RBI after Ridley touched home plate to make the score 12-1.

Ridley led the team going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs. Reynolds went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, while Villarreal added two hits, an RBI and a run.

The Aggies take on No. 10 Arizona in the second of a three-game series at 6 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex.
