Sam Houston State and Texas-San Antonio split the opening Southland Conference softball doubleheader of the 2009 season as the Bearkats won the first game 6-4 and the Roadrunners bounced back for a 7-1 victory on a wind-swept Roadrunner Field in San Antonio.
Trailing 4-3 going into the top of the seventh inning in the first game, Sam Houston State rallied for the victory. Amy Brown was the Kats’ top performer at the plate, going 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs including a game winning single.
Alex Survant started things with a single. Kendra Spivey walked and the pair moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Calli Wood.
Sarah Parich hit a sacrifice fly to scored Survant and tie the game, then Amy Brown’s two-run single scored Spivey and Megan Gegen, who had walked, to win the contest.
Brandi Crnkovic (4-4) was the winning pitcher for the Bearkats, spreading seven hits over seven innings.
In the second game, the Bearkats took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI triple by Survant that scored Hailey Wiginton. But UTSA bounced back to score three runs in the third inning and four more in the sixth.
Tomi Garrison took the loss, pitching the first four innings. Crnkovic pitched the final two innings.
Sam Houston State and UTSA will battle in the deciding game of the series Sunday afternoon.
