COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 15-ranked Texas A&M men’s tennis team will close out non-conference play this week with home dual matches scheduled against No. 10 USC on Thursday, March 19 and No. 35 LSU on Saturday, March 21 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
First serve between the Aggies (6-5) and Trojans (12-3) is set for Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT), while A&M will duel the Tigers (5-5) on Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT). USC will be the third-straight top 10 opponent to visit College Station in less than a week as the Aggies claimed a 4-3 upset over No. 7 Illinois on March 15, but were edged 4-3 by No. 5 Ohio State on March 13.
“We’ve had two top 10 opponents in a row at home and USC will be very similar to those teams,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “Based on their results and the type of players they have, this is probably the most talented team of the three we will play. They’ve had good results and have beaten some really good teams. They will be a very difficult, big match for us. They are good in singles and doubles and have no holes in their lineup. They are well coached and we will have a battle on our hands.”
USC leads 4-1 in the all-time series. A&M’s only win in the series was a 4-3 upset over the then No. 8-ranked Trojans in 2005. Meanwhile, LSU has won the last four-straight meetings between the two schools since 2004.
Senior All-American and reigning Big 12 Conference Player of the Week Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) is one of three top 20-ranked singles players who will be on hand this week at the Mitchell Center. Pollock, ranked No. 16 nationally, will take on fourth-ranked Robert Farah of USC and ninth-ranked Michael Venus of LSU undoubtedly at No. 1.
“LSU is another solid, SEC opponent that we have struggled with in the past,” Denton said. “Michael Venus plays No. 1 singles on a good team that stays ranked within the No. 10 to No. 20 ranges in the country. This team will be no different. They came in here two years ago and beat us, 4-3, and last year in Baton Rouge, 5-2. They are a good team with ranked players that are going to be a real challenge for us.”
Free admission will be given to fans 18 years old and younger wearing maroon to both matches versus USC and LSU. Fans are encouraged to come out and watch some of the best college tennis in the country this weekend which will most likely be a preview of the upcoming NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships to be held on May 14-25 in College Station.
A&M will also provide fans worldwide with a free live Internet stream of the USC match through Aggies All-Access on www.AggieAthletics.com.
