ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart died early today in a hit-and-run car crash only hours after pitching six shutout innings in his 2009 debut.
According to a spokesman for the University of California,
Irvine Medical Center, the 22-year-old Adenhart died after
undergoing surgery.
Adenhart was one of three people killed in the crash. A fourth
passenger is at the same hospital in critical condition.
Police say the driver of a minivan ran a red light in Fullerton,
Calif., and hit two cars, including one carrying Adenhart.
Police say the minivan driver fled the crash scene and was
captured a short time later. The driver was arrested and booked for
investigation of felony hit-and-run.
The right-hander from Silver Spring, Md., earned a spot in the
starting rotation on an injury-plagued Angels staff by impressing
manager Mike Scioscia late in spring training.
