Stephen F. Austin Sweeps SLC Weekly Honors As Consol Product Claims Hitter Of The Week

FRISCO -- Stephen F. Austin third baseman Briana Bishop has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and left hander Monika Covington has been named the Southland Pitcher of the week the league office announced Monday. Bishop takes home her first honor of the season as Covington joins Audrey Wood of Nicholls State and Chandler Hall of Texas State as the only league players with two pitcher of the week awards. The Ladyjacks are the fifth Southland program to sweep the softball weekly awards joining Nicholls State, McNeese State, Southeastern Louisiana and Central Arkansas.

Stephen F. Austin slugger Briana Bishop posted her second multi-home run game of the season in the series opener against Central Arkansas. The College Station, Texas native belted her third home run of the weekend in the series finale moving Bishop into sole possession of SFA’s career home runs record with 24. She also tied the SFA single-season mark with 11 homers thus far this year. Her eight RBI set a new season-high for a Ladyjack player in a league series.

Pitcher Monika Covington improved to 14-11 with two wins against Central Arkansas. The Huffman, Texas native, did not allow a single earned run and gave up just nine hits and one walk. She registered 10 strikeouts in the series opener marking eight games this season the left hander has posted double-digit strikeouts. Her 15 strikeouts on the weekend give her 200 for the season ranking third in the Southland.

This week’s hitter honorable mentions are Heather Fortenberry, UTA; Ali McCormack, TXST; Whitney Wilson, SHSU. Pitcher honorable mentions are Chandler Hall, TXST; Morgan Mikulin, SHSU; Audrey Wood, NICH. To receive an honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland softball sports information directors.

Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for their own player.
