AUSTIN -- The Texas High School Football Coaches Association is hosting its annual convention in Austin this week and one of the highlights of the multi day event is its Honors Luncheon which will be held on Wednesday.

This year Mexia News Editor Bob Wright is being honored as this years Putt Powell Sportswriter of the year.

Bob Wright graduated from Mexia High School in 1951, and returned home to work at the Mexia News after graduating from Baylor in 1956.

He has covered his beloved Black Cats in all kinds of athletic competitions. He is a walking encyclopedia of Black Cat football and has seen the Crimson and Black play in all but 7 football games over the last 50 years.

While Bob's first love is covering sports, he has also covered a lot of news events in and around Mexia since 1959.

One of his most interesting experiences came in 1962. According to a story published in the Groesbeck Journal on April 2, 2009. Bob said Ronald Reagan was scheduled to give a speech in Mexia at the City Auditorium that year.

A press conference had been set up prior to Reagan's address and Bob and his wife Peggy were the only attendees.

Bob stated, "Apparently, there was a communication problem because my wife, Peggy, and I were the only people present for the news conference along with Reagan."

Of course when Reagan became President Reagan, Bob could boast that at one time he had a private news conference with the 40th President of The United States.

Bob will be recognized tonight during the annual High School Football All Star game, and then be honored tomorrow afternoon during the THSCA annual Honors Luncheon.
