COLLEGE STATION -- The Texas A&M football team opened up fall camp with a two-and-a-half hour workout in shorts and helmets on a sunny and windy Monday evening before several hundred spectators at the Coolidge Practice Fields.

The Aggies spent their first full day as a team in meetings before going through the inaugural practice of fall camp.

“It looked like a typical first day of practice, but we still have a lot of work to do,” second-year head coach Mike Sherman said. “I think the effort was there, the desire was there, but the execution needs to be a lot better. That I expected, with a third of the kids on the team stepping on the field for the first time. Trying to get them up to speed was a challenge at different times, but I thought we made some progress. Tomorrow will be a lot better. This was a typical first day.”

Sherman was asked about the success of the offseason conditioning program, with several players dropping excess weight and others putting on more muscle.

“(Football strength coach) Dave Kennedy and his staff are as good as there is,” Sherman said. “They get guys to do things they normally don’t want to do. I think it showed that we’re in pretty good shape, especially while running those gassers like we did at the end of practice. We don’t have any weight issues that we’re overly concerned about either. Dave and his staff have done an outstanding job of getting the team to this point.”

A&M will keep the same schedule on Tuesday with a single workout set for 6:30 p.m. The Aggies open the season on September 5 when they host New Mexico at Kyle Field.
