COLLEGE STATION, Texas—The Texas A&M football team wrapped up the first week of fall with a controlled scrimmage of just over 90 minutes before several hundred fans on a sunny and hot Sunday afternoon at Kyle Field.

“We came out here in the heat of the day and really wanted to see how they responded, and I thought they did a good job,” head coach Mike Sherman said. “We played a lot of youngsters today. It’s a little different playing in Kyle Field with a great crowd on hand, and I think they did a good job overall.”

Sophomore tailback Cyrus Gray began the scrimmage by cutting through the line and racing 63 yards down the right sideline to set up a first-and-goal situation. True freshman Christine Michael took a handoff on the next play and scooted seven yards into the endzone for a touchdown.

Later in the scrimmage, Michael turned what would have been a loss into an exciting 25-yard run that received a strong ovation from the fans in the stands. Sophomore back Bradley Stephens added a slick 40-yard touchdown run near the end of the scrimmage to cap a good day for the A&M running backs. Michael finished the day with 56 yards on nine carries, while Stephens ran the ball six times for 49 yards. Both had a pair of touchdowns. Gray, meanwhile, led all backs with 77 yards on three carries.

“I thought Cyrus played well,” Sherman said. “We pulled back on him because his hamstring is a little bit tight. But overall I thought our backs did nice, they have played well since the start of camp.”

Junior Jerrod Johnson led the quarterbacks, completing 8-of-12 passes for 120 yards on the day while rushing for 36. Sophomore Ryan Tannehill threw for 44 yards and redshirt freshman Tommy Dorman added 32.

“Jerrod had a good day,” Sherman said. “He ran the ball when he had to take off and run, and he threw it when he had guys open. We dropped a few balls today that we have to catch, that would have been big plays. But overall I was pleased with the performance.”

Senior Howard Morrow had a team-high 65 receiving yards on three catches, while Jamie McCoy (38 yards) and Terrence McCoy (37 yards) caught three passes apiece.

The Aggie defense forced several three-and-outs and totaled 11 sacks on the afternoon. Ricky Cavanaugh, Matt Moss and Kevin Mangan had two apiece, while Von Miller recorded one and a half sacks in limited action.

Sophomore kicker Randy Bullock was a perfect 3-for-3 on extra points and added a 23-yard field goal.

Among those on hand to observe were former All-American defensive lineman Ray Childress, all-conference offensive lineman Louis Cheek and Aaron Oliver, a four-year letterwinner and member of the 1998 Big 12 Championship team. Doug Teague, a two-sport letterwinner for the Aggies in the late 1970s, was also on hand as part of the annual Kick Off Camp, which concluded Sunday.

The Aggies return to the practice field on Monday with a pair of workouts set for 8:25 a.m. (outdoors, open) and 4 p.m. (indoors, closed to public).

Fans wishing to attend practice that do not have the proper University parking permit are reminded to park in either the University Center Parking Garage across from Rudder Tower or the West Campus Parking Garage facing the press box side of Kyle Field.
