AUSTIN -- Morgan Mikulin pitched eight innings of shutout softball but the
Drake Bulldogs picked up an unearned run in the second extra inning to hand Sam Houston State a 1-0 loss in the first round of the Texas Longhorn Invitational Friday afternoon.
Then, in the Bearkats second contest of the tournament, host team No. 10 Texas handed Sam Houston a 5-1 loss as Longhorn pitched Meagan Denny struck out 15 of the 25 Bearkat batters she faced.
Drake (6-9) picked up six hits in the nine-inning contest while Bulldog
pitcher Melissa Osborn one-hit the Bearkats. The winning scored in the
second extra inning after an error on a ground ball allowed Billie Shields
to reach third base. Josephine Wilkin singled up the middle to scored
Shields. Sam Houston left six runners on base during the game.
Texas upped their record to 13-3 as Denny tossed a complete game
three-hitter, allowing just one run and walking one batter.
Kacie Gaskin helped the Longhorns take a 1-0 lead in the first inning when she slammed a wall-banging RBI triple to score Megan Willis. Sam Houston State (5-8) evened the tally in the second frame as Mandy Collier led off with a home run. Texas regained the advantage in the fifth when freshman shortstop Loryn Johnson connected for a solo home run, her second of the season, pushing the tally to 2-1.
The Longhorns added three more runs in the sixth inning
Bearkats starter Brandi Crnkovic (1-4) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking two Longhorns.
