EDINBURG -- The University of Illinois rolled up 14 runs on 15 hits and four Bearkat errors to defeat Sam Houston State 14-5 on the first day of the Texas-Pan American Invitational at Bronc Field Friday.
The Bearkats took an early 2-0 lead. Keith Stein's triple accounted for a
run in the second inning. Karl Krailo's RBI single chalked up a second tally in the third frame.
But Illinois roared back for three runs in the bottom of the third and
fourth innings and added six runs in the sixth.
Todd Sebek's single and Bobby Verbick's RBI double in the top of the seventh put three more runs on the board for the Bearkats.
Jacob Howard was the losing pitcher for the Kats, giving up six runs and eight hits in three innings. Will Goodwin, Stephen Spaugh, and Tanner Rainwater each worked in relief.
Stein led the Bearkats at the plate, going three for four. Krailo was two
for four with two runs batted in and Verbick also was two for four with one RBI.
Sam Houston State will play Texas-San Antonio at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Bearkats' second game at the UTPA event.
