AUSTIN - Freshmen Lauren Burns and Amy Brown each produced two hits and two RBIs to lead Sam Houston State to a 5-4 softball victory over Saint John's on the second day of the University of Texas Invitational at McCombs Field Saturday.
Burns had a run-scoring single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fourth. Brown scored two runs in the second inning with a single.
After Saint John's took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning, Tanya Hooser singled to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring in the winning run. The hit scored Stephanie Mosley who reached first on a bunt, moved to second on a ground out and then scored on Hooser's shot to left.
Freshman pitcher Morgan Mikulin (5-4) got the victory in relief. Brandi
Crnkovic started, giving up six hits and four runs in five and two thirds
innings. Mikulin struck out one batter and gave up a hit in an inning and a
Sam Houston State stands 6-8 on the season after the victory. Saint John's drops to 2-11.
