COLLEGE STATION -- The Texas A&M women’s tennis team is ranked No. 17 in the first computer generated FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings of the season, released today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The ranking is the Aggies’ highest since a No.16 showing on Feb. 1, 200 5. The ranking also is the highest by a Big 12 Conference team in this week’s listing of the nation’s top 75 teams.

In addition, A&M’s Anna Lubinsky is the highest ranked singles player from the Big 12, as she is ranked a career-high No. 17. Lubinsky’s previous highest spring-season ranking was No. 47 on March 21, 2006.

The doubles team of Lubinsky and Nicki Mechem (Fredericksburg, Texas) also is ranked an all-time high and a Big 12-best No. 22. The pair, whose previous high was No. 25, is 10-1 in dual matches and is riding a 10-match winning streak. Lubinsky and Mechem posted their biggest win as a tandem last weekend, upending No. 15 Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame.

A&M is 11-2, tying the 1997, 2001 and 2002 squads for the all-time best start after 13 matches. Last weekend, then-23rd-ranked A&M fell to No. 2 Notre Dame, 5-2, and defeated No. 25 Michigan, 5-2. Both matches were on the road and played indoors.

The Aggies return to action Monday, March 12 at Middle Tennessee State. Former A&M assistant coach Alison Ojeda is in her second season as head coach of the Blue Raiders.

A&M concludes a four-match road swing at No. 35 Vanderbilt in Nashville on Tuesday, March 13 before returning home for a Big 12 match on March 22 against Colorado, which upset Baylor last week.
