WACO -- Baylor pitchers Kirsten Shortridge, Ashley Monceaux, Lisa Ferguson, and Brittany Turner combined to hold Sam Houston State to four hits in 13 innings as the No. 14 Bears shut out the Bearkats in a pair of non-conference softball games Wednesday evening at Getterman Stadium.
Shortridge allowed one hit and one walk in five innings to get the victory
and Monceaux allowed one hit in two innings for the save as Baylor won the first game 1-0. A solo home run to left field by Alex Colyer in the third inning accounted for Baylor's only run.
Sam Houston State Brandi Crnkovic had a strong performance on the mound as well, giving up only four hits in six innings including two strike outs. Stephanie Mosley and Amanda Lindsey picked up the Bearkats' only hits.
Ferguson was the game-winner in the nightcap, giving up two hits in four innings. Turner pitched the final two innings. Morgan Mikulin was in the circle for Sam Houston, giving up nine hits in six innings for the loss.
Amy Brown and Mandy Collier had the only hits for Sam Houston.
Colyer also had a solo home run in the sixth inning of the second game.
Baylor broke the game open with five runs on four hits and an error in the second inning.
Sam Houston State (7-10) opens Southland Conference play this weekend in Lake Charles, when they play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday against McNeese State. The Bearkats return home for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader with Jackson State Monday, March 12.
