Aggies Win Opener Against Gators, 7-1

COLLEGE STATION -- David Newmann allowed one run on five hits and struck out nine in a complete-game effort to lead the No. 9 Texas A&M baseball team past Florida, 7-1, Friday night at Olsen Field.

Newmann (3-0) allowed Florida’s only run in the first on a RBI groundout. After a two-out double by Jonathan Pigott in the fourth, Newmann retired 14-straight Gator hitters until issuing a one-out walk in the ninth. That runner was erased on a double play to end the game.

“We knew he (Newmann) had the stuff to be a Friday-night guy,” A&M head coach Rob Childress said. “A win like this gives us a lot of confidence. We know that any time we go into a Friday night, we have a chance to win with him on the mound.”

With the win, A&M improved to 16-2 while Florida dropped to 9-8. The series resumes Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

The Aggies tied the game in the bottom of the third when Parker Dalton collected A&M’s first hit of the night off Gators’ starter Bryan Augenstein. The hit was a triple to center which plated Josh Stinson all the way from first.

A&M posted its first lead of the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dalton singled and with one out, Ben Feltner singled to run his hitting streak to 14 games. Both runners scored on Blake Stouffer’s triple down the line in right, and two batters later, Darby Brown delivered a two-out RBI single to make the score 4-1.

The Aggies added three insurance runs in the eighth. Feltner singled and Blake Stouffer walked. After Craig Stinson struck out, Augenstein was replaced by David Hurst. Feltner and Stouffer executed a double steal before a wild pitch by Hurst allowed Feltner to score and Stouffer to trot to third. Brown singled through a drawn-in infield to plate another run. Daman Aaron walked and Josh Stinson singled to score Brown and increase the A&M lead to 7-1.

Augenstein (2-3) lasted 7 1/3 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked two.
