COLLEGE STATION --- Three-time Olympic diving coach Ken Armstrong has been named interim diving coach at Texas A&M, Director of Athletics Bill Byrne announced on Wednesday.
“We are delighted that Kenny Armstrong has agreed to join us as the interim diving coach for our men and women,” Byrne said. “Kenny has an incredible background as a three-time Olympian, 2002 national coach of the year, and U.S. Olympic Diving Coach. He has coached numerous NCAA champions and Olympians.”
Armstrong currently oversees the prestigious The Woodlands Diving Academy in The Woodlands, Texas, which has produced multiple junior and senior national diving champions under his direction.
A former Olympic diver himself, Armstrong played a key role in diver Laura Wilkinson’s gold medal victory in the platform dive at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and coached Wilkinson at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games.
Byrne said Armstrong would not be the Aggies’ full-time coach because of his duties with The Woodlands Diving Academy. He said A&M is in the process of hiring a permanent diving coach.
Armstrong steps in for former A&M diving coach Kevin Wright, who was relieved of his duties on Oct. 2.
