SPOKANE, Wash. -- Kevin Durant had a splendid opening NCAA tournament game with 27 points and eight rebounds to lead fourth-seeded Texas to a 79-67 victory over New Mexico State in the East Regional.

Fellow Texas freshman D.J. Augustine had 19 points and seven assists. Sophomore A.J. Abrams added 16 points for the Longhorns, who start four freshmen and have seven on their 12-man roster.

Elijah Ingram had 16 points for 13th-seeded New Mexico State, which ended 25-and-9. It's the Aggies' first N-C-A-A appearance since 1999 but they haven't advanced past the first round since 1993.
