BOCA RATON, FL -- Sharonda McDonald scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning to help the 3rd-ranked Texas A&M softball team come away with a 3-1 victory over the host team Florida Atlantic University Owls in the FAU Parents’ Weekend Tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon.

With the win A&M moves to 25-3 on the season, while the Owls fell to 17-12 with the loss.

“I’m excited about the way our kids came out today and bounced back from last night’s loss,” commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. “I really felt like it was going to be a different story for us offensively. I thought the FAU pitcher (Jen Musillo) would look a little different in the daylight. Our hitters did a nice job of staying disciplined and laying off the rise-ball.”

FAU plated their only run of the game and took the lead in the bottom of the first inning on two singles, a stolen base and an Aggie throwing error.

However, starting pitcher Amanda Scarborough came out in the second and helped her cause in the circle by taking an outside pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run, evening the score one-all.

In the sixth inning, McDonald singled to start the inning, extending her hitting streak to 14 games, and moved all the way home on a single by Macie Morrow and a throwing error by FAU centerfielder, Jenna Lopez. Morrow would score on the next play, as Jamie Hinshaw looped a single into shallow left field, making the score 3-1.

“We’re a great team when we get our speed on base,” Evans continued. “It puts a lot of pressure on defenses. It’s nice to see our speedster set the table and then our kids string some hits together to get the runs in.”

Scarborough retired 14 batters in a row before giving up a walk to start the seventh. The junior pitcher earned her 12th win in the circle, working seven complete only allowing three hits, none of which left the infield. Scarborough struck out nine FAU batters.

Scarborough was named Tournament MVP after posting three wins on the mound, a 0.00 ERA and 23 strike outs. She also had two home runs and three RBI. It was the second honor for Scarborough in this tournament, as she took home the same award two years ago.

“Scarborough was terrific,” Evans concluded. “She pitched three great games this weekend and helped herself out offensively, getting the big home run in this game to get the win. It’s nice to come to in this tournament and win the championship. It’s our goal every tournament to walk away with a trophy and that’s what we did here today.”

The Aggies will head to San Marcos to face the Texas State Bobcats on Wednesday night. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
