SAN MARCOS -- Mandy Gegen went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI and Megan Gibson pitched a three-hit shutout as the 3rd-ranked Texas A&M softball team beat the Texas State Bobcats 5-0 in front of 904 fans on Wednesday night.

The Aggies move to 26-3 on the season with the win, while the Bobcats fall to 15-17.

“I’m really pleased with the way our team played tonight,” commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. “I thought we were running on all cylinders. I thought we were very sharp defensively and very aggressive offensively, which is nice to see. Gibson, of course, was great on the mound. Overall it was a great night for us.”

With Gibson and Amanda Scarborough both reaching on singles and Alex Reynolds sacrificing them into scoring position, Gegen, A&M’s freshman left fielder, blasted her first collegiate home run to give the Aggies a 3-0 advantage in the second inning.

Gegen logged her fourth RBI of the game in the fifth inning driving in Scarborough on a double that hit the left field wall. Scarborough reached base on a two-out walk and moved to second on a single by Reynolds.

“Mandy Gegen was great tonight,” Evans said. “It was nice to see the freshman step up in some key situations and get a couple of timely hits. Of course the home run is always exciting, but for her to step up and drive in another run; she’s got to be feeling really good about herself to have brought home four of our five RBI.”

Scarborough added an insurance run in the sixth, patiently drawing her second walk of the game on a 3-2 count to bring in Macie Morrow from third.

Gibson registered her 10th win of the season in the circle. She worked seven complete allowing just three hits; she walked two and struck out six. The shutout was Gibson’s third this season.

With her bunt single in the fourth, Sharonda McDonald extended her hitting streak to 15 games. A&M managed 11 hits on the night from nine different batters.

The Aggies return home to open Big 12 play this Saturday at the Aggie Softball Complex as they play host to the Iowa State Cyclones. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

“I think this is a great way for us to go into conference season,” Evans concluded. “Our goal is really to continue to approach all the games the same; to not go out and hype-up that it is conference. We just need to go out and continue to play the way we’ve been playing.”
